Dental health care is generally considered much more expensive than general healthcare. But it is not dentistry that costs so much, it is because people tend to procastinate dental appointments until the very last minute and they end up costing them so much!

A lot more Americans are choosing to skip dental health checkups because of the rising costs of dental care. The state of dental insurance is even worse than that of health insurance. Compared to an estimated 28 million Americans who lack medical coverage, almost 114 million lack dental insurance of any sort.

These are the people who cannot afford the high costs of dentistry and skip out on regular dental health checkups which can lead to even bigger problems in the long run.

That being said, quality dental care health checkups do not always have to be so expensive. There are a number of ways to have access to low-cost dental care, some of which we’ll discuss here:

Community Health Centers

Federally funded health centers have a “pay-what-you-can-afford” policy and these centers are present in most cities and rural areas. Find one near you by visiting the “Find a Health Center” website by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

Dental Health Schools

Dental health schools usually offer trainee dentists to treat patients at reduced costs, for experience. They are supervised by experienced and licensed dentists closely. Find a dental health school near you here.

Medicaid

Originally a state-run program that offers medical benefits, eligible individuals and families can receive dental benefits in some cases too. Dental benefits are provided for all children covered by Medicaid under state law. Learn how to apply for Medicaid coverage by clicking here.

State and Local Resources

Local or state health departments usually know of programs, clinics or organizations in your area that provide free, low cost or reduced price dental care. Calling your local or state health departments may help you learn more about the financial assistance programs in your areas.

Private Clinics

If none of the above applies to you, and you’re just looking for lower-cost dental care options, a lot of private clinics may offer low cost, affordable dentistry in your area. Ask around and look for places near you that are comparatively cheaper than the rest.
